Last modified: 2015-06-04

Saga University ownes "Ichiba Naojiro Collection (indicate as ichiba)", a individual-scale collection of rare books at the late Edo period in Japan. A part of rare books in the collection are digitized and published including bibliographical information on Rare books collection site of Saga University Library.

Recently, many digital archives (collections) like ichiba have been published on the Web. Contents in archives have been easily shared with people and used for academic researches. However, we have faced some difficulties about bibliographical data. We would like to share our opinion about the difficulties with readers of this site.

[Difficulties related to bibliographical data of digital archives]

  1. Finding entites through bibliographical data
  2. Understanding relationships and histories of entities emerged on the books
  3. Reffering contexts of those entities in the books

[Our proposal for making useful metadata for future]

  1. Making concepts rare books with standard conceptual models a.k.a. ontologies
  2. Constructing bibliographical data specialized for rare books in Edo period with a domain ontology

[Making concepts rare books with standard conceptual models a.k.a. ontologies]

Generally speaking, rare books are "books". This is the reason why most librarians offer metadata of rare books as books. Researchers, especially, need to know about contents of books. Their research objects are translations and analysis of the contents. On the other hand, the researchers have another point of view which rare books is as cultural objects.
